When I Googled the word Pergola, I could see a lot of spellings come out from the Google pages. Some sites spell pergola while the others spell pergola, pagola. I came across the wisdom to check the word in the dictionary and the correct spelling is pergola. The meaning of the word, I think suit most of what we understand “A framework that supports climbing plant” (at least that’s the definition gave by my PDA word book program).
In Bahasa Melayu (Malay Language), most of the people I know will pronounce the thing as “Pagola”(malay words can be pronounced as what you spell). I guess they are not quite right on that. According to the Kamus Dewan (4th edition), the spelling is also Pergola same as what I found in English. I guess instead pronouncing it as “Pagola” next time I will pronounce it as “Pergola”. But, since the “pagola” pronunciation is already fossilized in Malay tongues, I don’t mind people call it “Pagola…hehe…my dad and mom call it Pagola anyway….
The literal meaning of Pergola in Malay as what described by Kamus Dewan 4th edition is “struktur berupa junjung atau gerbang drpd kayu atau besi (biasanya terdapat di taman) yg menjunjung tumbuh-tumbuhan memanjat dan dapat dijadikan lorong pejalan kaki bertutup”.
A lil bit background about the picture. It stars with the story of two lovers…my mom and dad. My dad is a garden and plant lover while my mom is a wood lover. If people come to our house they will see these two elements. The interior parts of the house are filled with Jati and other wooded furniture which my mom bought it from so many places. Even our main door is made from Jati wood. The garden is crafted by my dad. He enjoys to see his plant grow so much that he will spend hours to trim those plants to a perfection (perfect according to my eyes at least).
So..About a month ago…they came with this pergola project idea. My dad went to a second hand wood store to buy some old but nice wood. His idea is to make the pergola look as old skool as possible. By using some 150 years old (look alike) 2nd hand wood, his idea was realized. Pretty cool and creative idea I think…he chose a 1855 big old bulk wood from that shop and hire his dear friend (Wak Bilal) to build the pergola (my dad and I are lousy carpenter…hehe)….this picture is my dad’s friend while he’s finishing the last bit of the pergola. After nice timber finish paint, the pergola looked marvelous with an old skool touch with it. It doesn’t look like it was made yesterday yet we know that the pergola is new. Thanks to Wak Bilal for his detail and creative work.
As for both black and white and colored picture in my blog…I just don’t know which one to choose…so…you choose
