I snapped this picture on my way to Sungai Buloh hospital with my family to visit my late grandmother (May her rest in peace- Al-fatihah). The tool booth is located in the new housing estate, Setia Alam. I like the layout of the housing estate because it is planned for long term (I think 20 years ahead) unlike some Malaysian housing estate which is poorly planned (I will discuss about our town planner in other thread).
Currently I’m in a middle of self thought and self grasping knowledge to collect as much data as possible about wide angle lens, I mean, Ultra wide angle lens….and yesss…I’m planning to buy one…^_^. After sorting few options of lenses, I’m stuck with Tokina AT-X 116 Pro DX 11-16mm F2.8 and Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Autofocus .
Both of the lenses have their own advantages. Both are super sharp and producing excellent image. Some say that Tokina chromatic abbreviation is high but some say that it is controlled. While for the Canon, people said it produces distortion more than the Tokina but it is sharper compared to the Tokina. Furthermore the Tokina’s distortion is easier to be corrected using software. I never try it but that’s what people say.
The thing which put me in a dilemma to choose between these two lenses are not their disability to produce good photos (from the review that I read, both of the lenses sells like a hot cake…especially the Tokina), but their advantages.
Of course if you are a Canon fan, you will stick with the OEM product. Well, I’m a Canon fan but im not stick to that rules. Canon OEM product is “F’ingly” expensive. At least until now all my lenses are from Canon. Other than that…such as flash, wireless remote and wireless trigger…I’m sticking with 3rd party product which is as far as I’m using it until now…they didn’t give me any headache.
The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Autofocus is a fast lens because of ultra sonic motor (USM). It is faster than the Tokina (absolutely no doubt), but I’m ok with moderate autofocus motor in Tokina (enough for me)…I like the sharp picture and how it handle flare compared to Tokina. Besides that, the lens is wider and the zoom range is also wider (up till 22 mm). The two things that holds me from buying this lens is the cost (400 more Ringgit than the Tokina) and the aperture (not a constant aperture lens).
Tokina AT-X 116 Pro DX 11-16mm F2.8 is a very sharp lens (as what I seen from the review). In case I convert my Canon 40D to a full frame body like Canon 5D Mark II, I still can use this lens…but with minor tweak. 11 mm is wide enough for me and I think, 1 mm difference with the Canon 10-22 mm is not obvious. The most interesting part of this lens is its wide and constant aperture, 2.8. At this wide aperture, I can play with bokeh especially if I shoot wedding reception or outdoor. It would be nice to have F 2.8 when you shoot indoor…really like that feature…I also came across a forum thread stating that the lens build quality as on par with Canon L series…ermmm…need more clarification on this…I’ve hold this lens once…I think I almost agree with the statement…^_^
